Professional photographer Craig Norris teaches beginners to create memorable images in a four-session workshop, including an intensive weekend theory day and field trip, an evening class and a one-day studio session. Topics include terminology, camera functions, exposure and metering, assessing film and lenses, lighting and flash, photo composition and framing, studio and outdoor shots, portraiture and landscape, and choosing cameras. Also available are a digital camera workshop and a Photoshop class. Schedules are published on the website.

As well as degree courses, the school has a varied program of short courses, including five photography courses: Foundations of Photography, Introduction to the Art of Black and White Photography, Painterly Approach to Photography, Communicate Through Photography and Documentary Photography Workshop. Courses are held in Cantonese, except the black-and-white photography classes, which are held in English and Cantonese. Course lengths vary. Students should provide their own cameras.

Founded in 1937, the society is a non-profit organization that promotes photography and exchanges ideas with other branches of the arts. Its expert photographers run monthly classes for beginner and intermediate members, as well as hold free public lectures at the Central Library, practical portrait sessions and occasional field trips. Membership is reasonably priced. Call for schedules.
