Built on 10 hectares of natural hillside in the center of Kwai Chung, this green and leafy park is popular with morning walkers. Expect to see a multitude of birds and some small animals. Besides a picnic area, facilities include soccer pitches, basketball and volleyball courts, playgrounds, roller skating rink and walking trails. From Kwai Chung MTR, take bus 31M to Shek Lei.

Ma On Shan Park

Formerly a mining area, Ma On Shan Park is located on the shore of Tolo Harbour, offering views of Pat Sin Leng. Picnic on the lawn, or perhaps in the floral and topiary garden. Other facilities include a maze, children's playgrounds, marine plaza, jogging trail and pebble-walking trail. Buses include 85C, 681 and 286M.

Ma Wan Tung Wan Beach

Ma Wan offers unparalleled views of the Tsing Ma suspension bridge that arches over the island. Picnic on the beach, or cheat and eat at the alfresco seafront restaurant, which has shower facilities. There's a fishing village nearby, one of the two left in Hong Kong (the other is Tai O). From Tsing Yi Airport Express station, take bus NR330 to Ma Wan's Tung Wan beach.

Pak Lap Wan

A 20-minute walk from Sai Kung Man Yee Road, which runs around High Island Reservoir, Pak Lap Wan is a pretty beach for a romantic picnic. There's a 300-year-old village and temple to explore, and if you feel spontaneous, you can always check into the Sai Kung Pak Lap Holiday Village (2791-9589). Alternatively, there's an AFCD campsite near the reservoir. To get there, take bus 94 from Sai Kung to the park entrance at Pak Tam Chung, then catch a cab to Pak Lap and follow the brick path downhill for about 20 minutes.
