Many of the new shops and restaurants on Discovery Bay's Water Margin offer a spectacular sea view, but Hemingway's is the closest to the beach itself. It serves Jamaican fare, such as jerk chicken, ribs and real key-lime pie. Island music plays in the background, and the cocktail list is formidable. It also does a mean barbecue on Tuesdays, Thursdays and on weekends.

This seafood restaurant is a favorite with junk parties, and is well known for its chili squid. Set on wooden decking right by the beach, you can take a hike around the island before lunch. Take a ferry from St. Stephen's Pier, or hire a junk or sampan to get there.

Not strictly a beach restaurant, this intimate place is set in a village house with lovely gardens running down to the sea at Three Fathoms Cove, so you can feel the grass rather than the sand under your feet. It serves superb modern French cuisine in a tiny, honey-hued dining room or under a canopy on the lawn. The organic vegetables are straight from the garden. Make sure you book, because it's extremely popular.
